In this episode of Chalk Talk, Amelia Dalton, Mark Grierson from Digi, and Rob (our Rob) explore how Digi and SparkFun are working together to make cellular connected IoT design easier than ever before. They investigate the benefits that the Digi Remote Manager® brings to IoT design, the details of the SparkFun Digi XBee Development Kit, and how you can get started using a SparkFun Board for XBee for your next design.

The video shows you all you need from Digi and SparkFun to bring your IoT dreams into reality! Here are just a few highlights from this informative talk:

Mark gave a rundown of the Digi XBee Ecosystem, covering all the different capabilities their modules have, as well as some of their software integrations.

  • The Digi Xbee Ecosystem gives you access to 16 wireless protocols across their 3 form factors
  • XBee Studio is an interface you can use to configure your devices, perform updates, run MicroPython, and learn more about your Digi XBee up close.
  • Digi Remote Manager is well, remote! You can configure devices, monitor your IoT setup’s health and security, stream your data, and integrate other systems through the API, all remotely.

Mark also discussed the Digi Sensor Lab, a collaboration with SparkFun.

  • The Sensor Lab is a demonstration that shows the full journey of data, from device to cloud, using the Digi XBee boards from SparkFun.
  • Some of the use cases included heart rate monitoring, asset tracking, agriculture and irrigation monitoring, and access control with RFID.

Rob then takes us through the SparkFun offerings with the Digi XBee.

  • The SparkFun Digi XBee Development Kit has everything you need to create a full fledged IoT data pipeline, complete with a SIM card for cellular connectivity, a Qwiic humidity sensor, and all the connectors you’ll need.
  • There are four development boards we have that incorporate the Digi XBee, which come in different footprints with different connectivity options.
  • These boards are compatible with the Qwic connect system, which means testing and prototyping with your Digi XBee has never been easier – get connected with no soldering and no need to plan out complex wiring.
  • Rob also covers a use case of measuring tectonic plates and continental drift to alert nearby populations to risks of landslides, earthquakes and avalanches using precise GNSS equipment and Digi Xbee Cellular communication.
